Best of 2009: New food.
[I'm participating in Gwen Bell's Best of 2009 Blog Challenge, in case you're all like, what's with the theme?]
New food. You’re now in love with Lebanese food and you didn’t even know what it was in January of this year.
It turns out, beets are delicious! For most of my life I loathed beets. And it really, really bothers me to hate any vegetable–it just seems so wrong, when they’re mostly so wonderful and healthy, like a gorgeous, delicious gift!–so every couple of years I’d give beets a try. (Also? They’re such a pretty color when they’re washed off and cut. And remember how in one of the Reader-Produced Issues of Sassy Magazine, they advocated rubbing raw beets on your lips to get that awesome purpley-red? Yeah, that was weird.) But they tasted to me like a combination of dirt and blood, and how does one get around that? One doesn’t. One just doesn’t. But sometime in 2009, and I don’t remember when or where, a switch was flipped. I tasted them again and lost my mind over how delicious they are. And then I couldn’t get enough of them. Fresh. Canned. Sliced. Grated. Roasted. On salads. As a side dish. As a snack! Seriously. Me and beets, we got a thang going on. And it’s good.
