[I'm participating in Gwen Bell's Best of 2009 Blog Challenge, in case you're all like, what's with the theme?]
New food. You’re now in love with Lebanese food and you didn’t even know what it was in January of this year.
It turns out, beets are delicious! For most of my life I loathed beets. And it really, really bothers me to hate any vegetable–it just seems so wrong, when they’re mostly so wonderful and healthy, like a gorgeous, delicious gift!–so every couple of years I’d give beets a try. (Also? They’re such a pretty color when they’re washed off and cut. And remember how in one of the Reader-Produced Issues of Sassy Magazine, they advocated rubbing raw beets on your lips to get that awesome purpley-red? Yeah, that was weird.) But they tasted to me like a combination of dirt and blood, and how does one get around that? One doesn’t. One just doesn’t. But sometime in 2009, and I don’t remember when or where, a switch was flipped. I tasted them again and lost my mind over how delicious they are. And then I couldn’t get enough of them. Fresh. Canned. Sliced. Grated. Roasted. On salads. As a side dish. As a snack! Seriously. Me and beets, we got a thang going on. And it’s good.

Used to hate beets. Now, I can eat them if they are julienned. And actually, dig them. The color. The health benefits. The flavor, not so much.
Oh, Emma! I keep finding posts that I resonate with me – I’m all: “Me too!” – but not this one – sigh – I still don’t like beets!
I WANT to, I do! But ugh. Their color is luscious, health benefits – yep, but taste – argh. My mother likes them, my (adult) kids like ‘em, even my granddaughter.
Maybe in 2010? We can hope.
p.s. “Yeah, that was weird.” That line, after the set-up for it, cracked me up!
Roasting Beets with other root vegetables is a great way to eat them. Sometimes when eaten raw they cause my kids throat to hurt. Pickled Beets is also good.
I love it! They really are beautiful and can be utterly delicious, though I’m not sure I’ve ever had canned beets. I prefer seared with butter. Yum! Congratulations on your discover.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones – I have always loved beets and still do. I’m a bit of a slow learner though, even after all these years I still sometimes freak out at the colour of my pee after a beet binge. There’s often that split second moment when I’m, like, AAAAAA- I’m bleeding internally!!!!
Lianne…I don’t like to admit to this, but… I do that too. :/
Seared with butter! That sounds amazing. I must try that next!
QA — oh yes, I love them roasted with other root veggies. And pickled? Mmmm… you have excellent taste. =)
Karen, I can honestly say I have no idea why they tasted good one day! Very strange. Please carry on for me in the Beet-Haters Club. I feel bad having left it minus a member.
Gwen, you eat them anyway? Even though though you don’t like them? You are one tough chick.
really? you may have convinced me to try them again again. I mean, the color is fabulous, but the taste just has not grown on me.
